We are pleased to share some good news from our friends at Georgia Equality! On June 18, Americans United's Legislative Director Maggie Garrett will receive the group’s Allen Thornell Political Advancement Award during an “Evening for Equality” event in Atlanta.
Maggie lead the AU Legislative staff in working with Georgia Equality this spring to block numerous discriminatory bills in the state legislature, including HB 757. Though branded a “religious freedom” bill, HB 757 would have allowed religion to be used as an excuse to discriminate against LGBTQ people and others.
In a statement about the award, Georgia Equality praised Maggie’s diligence and dedication to true religious freedom, saying she is “the most responsive attorney in reviewing legislative language” they’ve ever worked with. She will be honored alongside State Sen. Harold Jones (D-Augusta), Grady Health System CEO John Haupert and Brian Tolleson, owner of a digital entertainment company.
We’re proud of Maggie and hope you are too– your support of Americans United makes her work possible! To send Maggie a message, just reply to this email. For more information about the event, visit Georgia Equality’s website.
